Jean Canfield Building Receives Lieutenant-Governor's Award of Excellence in Architecture

August 8, 2008

The Jean Canfield Building in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, one of the most environmentally friendly buildings ever constructed by Public Works and Government Services Canada, has won a prestigious architectural award. The P.E.I. Lieutenant-Governor’s Award of Excellence in Architecture was presented by Lieutenant-Governor Barbara Hagerman to Larry Jones, partner with Bergmark Guimond Hammarlund Jones. This firm undertook a joint venture with HOK Architects in the creation of this building.

Showcasing world-leading environmental technologies, the Jean Canfield building is 60 percent more energy efficient than similar buildings in its class. The building’s environmental footprint is decreased by using:Jean Canfield Building

  • rainwater for building operations
  • a reflective roof that reduces heat absorption
  • green power purchased from provincial wind turbines
  • light and shade to moderate indoor temperatures; and
  • a photovoltaic array that generates 130,000 watts of electrical power from solar energy.

The array alone has the equivalent energy reduction of taking 80 cars off the road each year. Jean Canfield has raised the bar for environmental buildings across the country, and around the world.

The building is also registered with the Canadian Green Building Council with LEED® Gold as the target.
