St. Andrews Lock and Dam (SALD) - Tourist Destination
The highway bridge over St Andrews Lock and Dam connects Lockport on the east and west sides of the river. There are many attractions in the area including the Lockport Heritage Park – Kenosewun Centre, which houses artifacts dating back to 3,000 years ago. SALD is located at the north end of the scenic River Road along the west side of the Red River and spans the river to the east side.
Spring
The frames, hinged at one end, and the mounted curtains are swung from their horizontal resting place on the underside of the trusses to vertically rest against the concrete sill or fixed dam. The wooden curtains are then rolled down the frames. This action restricts water flow, raises the south water levels and floods the rapids, allowing Red River navigation from SALD to Winnipeg.
Summer
During flood conditions some or all the curtains are rolled up and some or all the frames are swung up until the flood waters pass.

Late Fall
All the curtains are rolled up and all of the frames are swung up and hung from the underside of the trusses. This protects the “moveable dam” from being frozen in place over winter and damaged during spring breakup.
Kenosewun -The Place of Many Fish
Situated close to Winnipeg, SALD has become a popular urban fishing spot. Catfish weighing as much as 14 kg are not uncommon.
