Message for Public Service Pension Plan Recipients:

Every April 30, do you find yourself having to pay income tax?

  • Every year, do you find that when you prepare your income tax and benefit return that there has not been enough tax deducted and you still have to make a tax payment upon filing?
  • Do you make instalment payments throughout the year only to find that you still have to pay upon filing?

If either of these scenarios applies to you, you may be able to reduce your net tax owing or reduce the amount of your instalment payments by increasing the amount of tax withheld from certain types of income such as your public service pension.

To request that an additional amount be deducted at source from your pension, complete Form TD1, Personal Tax Credits Return, and submit it to your public service pension plan administrator. If you are receiving income from another employer or payer, you can complete the same form and submit it to that employer or payer to increase the amount withheld at source as well. Individuals in Québec should use the federal TD1 and provincial Form TP1015.3–V, Source Deductions Return.

For more information or to obtain Form TD1, visit the Canada Revenue Agency Web site.

To have income tax withheld from Old Age Security or Canada Pension Plan benefits, complete Form ISP3520, Request for Income Tax Deductions, and send it to your Service Canada office. You can also make your request over the phone by calling 1-800-277-9914.
