Public consultations were held from May 15 to June 15, 2009, to obtain comments and suggestions from the public regarding the future of the Armoury, and the results of these consultations are now available.

The Future of the Armoury

In its 2009 budget, the Government of Canada set aside $2 million to develop a plan for the future of the Armoury.

The Government of Canada is sensitive to local issues of great importance to the population, and is listening to the comments received by the public. Since the fire at the Armoury, many ideas for projects have been put forward. The consultation process, held from May 15 to June 15, aimed at providing a forum for citizens, interest groups and other levels of government to formally express their views and make suggestions on the Armoury's future.

PWGSC hired Jean Baillargeon, an expert advisor from National Public Relations to conduct the consultations. The advisor was supported by a Federal Advisory Committee chaired by PWGSC and including representatives of National Defence, the Privy Council Office, the Parks Canada Agency, and Canadian Heritage.

The public consultations were mainly conducted using the Website. Between May 15 and June 15, 2009, Canadians were invited to complete a questionnaire consisting of 14 questions and a comments section. The Website received over 2,500 hits and more than 700 people either completed the questionnaire directly online (99% of respondents), mailed it or faxed it. Nearly 300 respondents also submitted comments.

Those who wished could also propose ideas or concepts, which had to meet certain criteria. Eleven opinions and 10 concept proposals were received during the public consultations.

A public session was held in Quebec City on May 20, 2009, during which five proposals were presented in person to the Federal Advisory Committee.
