Installation — ReTaken on Strength (RE-TOS) Calculation System

Network Server Installation

The network server installation is for installing the RE-TOS Calculation System's database files on the network server, in a central location where all RE-TOS Calculation System users on the network can access the same databases.

The main advantage to this is that the network server has backup copies of all its files made on a regular basis, and in the case of a "network crash" where a file is damaged or destroyed, you should be able to restore it from this backup copy.

The main disadvantage to loading the system on a network server is performance. Accessing files on a network server is slower than accessing them from your local hard drive. If your network server is very busy, you will experience performance degradation on the RE-TOS Calculation System.

In addition, you could receive RE-TOS Calculation System errors that are in fact caused by the network server being unable to reply to system requests in the expected time frame. A system error is then being generated that is actually either a time-out error or a timing sequence error.

If you experience system errors only at times when you know your server is very busy or if your system performance is very slow, it is recommended that you install the system on your local hard drive as this offers the best possible system performance.

Note: Only the network administrator should perform a network server installation as the person performing the installation must have sufficient security rights to create a directory and copy files to the server.

New Network Security Requirements:

With the release of version 4.0, the RE-TOS System operates within the Microsoft .NET Framework and must be a "Trusted Application" so that it can be run from a network location. Within the installation package are a number of files that provided a solution to this issue for our Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) Novell network. They are being included as a possible solution for other government departments who may wish to run the application from their networks. However, since we do not know how networks in other environments are configured, we cannot guarantee that our solution will work.

Upon successful completion of the network installation, with our solution, the users of the application should then execute the "Retos_run.EXE" file whenever they want to use the RE-TOS System. In doing so, the Retos_run.exe file first checks to see if the RE-TOS System's directory is a "trusted" .NET network location for the user. If it is not, the file will: create an entry in the user's Windows registry under "Retos System", "run" the TrustDrive.EXE to register the RE-TOS System's location as trustworthy and then execute the RE-TOS System itself - Retos32.exe. Should the user already have this directory designated as "trustworthy", the Retos_run.exe will just start up the RE-TOS System.

Installation

Network and stand-alone installations are the same. During the installation you will be asked to identify the disk drive on which to install the system; you can then choose a local drive or a network drive.

To start the installation, execute the SETUP.EXE file and then follow the instructions given to you on the screen by the setup program.

Note: These instructions are also contained in the README.TXT file that is included in this download.

System Files, Filenames and Locations

The RE-TOS Calculation System is a Windows application with a number of application databases, support and Windows files. Each of these files is important and should not be deleted or relocated unless specifically permitted as explained in this help file. The files are spread over a number of locations, as specified below. The setup installation program used to install the RE-TOS Calculation System will automatically copy and place these files into the required locations.

*.SAV Files

There are two files with the short extension *.SAV which are part of the system's databases. Do not attempt to open these files and change the structure or add data. They are used by the system internally. They are both located in the \Data subdirectory of the application's path. The two files are:

  • TABLE.SAV
  • DATABASE.SAV

*.EMP Files

There may be several files with the short extension *.EMP used by this system. These files hold the employee's information which can be saved and retrieved for calculation. The default file is RETOS.EMP and is located in the \Data subdirectory of the application path. However, the users may create as many files as they require using any name they choose as long as the filename ends with the short extension *.EMP. The *.EMP files may be kept in any directory the user chooses, as long as the user has sufficient rights to that location.

*.TBL Files (TOSSYS.TBL)

There is one file with the short extension *.TBL that is part of the system's databases. This file (RETOSSYS.TBL) is the active database for the calculation tables and is located in the subdirectory "\data" of the application path. If this file is deleted or becomes corrupt then the system administrator may recreate this file from the TABLE.SAV file.

*.BAK Files

As part of the database maintenance, backup files are created in case there is a need to restore files. They can be deleted. They are found in the \Data\Backup subdirectory of the application's path.

*.DLL, *.CONFIG, *.MANIFEST and *.EXE Files

These are system files required to run the system. Deleting these files will cause the application to crash. All the listed files are located in the application path.

*.RTF, *.RPT, *.PDF, *.XLS and *.DOC Files

These files are created by the user and are saved calculation files. They store the calculation results and can be retrieved, through most word processors, to view or print. They can be deleted if no longer required by the user. With the release of version 4.0, the ability to save the calculation results in a file format other than .RTF has been introduced. Within the application path there is a subdirectory called \Data\Files where it is recommended these files are kept.

Note: Prior to version 3.0 of the RE-TOS Calculation System, calculation results were saved with a ".CAL" extension and in a proprietary format that required the RE-TOS Calculation System for viewing and printing purposes. Unfortunately, files of this format can no longer be retrieved or read by this system.

Installation of the System on this Computer

Execute/run the SETUP.EXE program to start the installation program and follow the instructions on the screen to install the system.

Installation of the System onto Another Computer

SETUP.EXE, RETOS Setup Package.msi, README.TXT and LIREMOI.TXT should be installed.

To install on another computer, execute/run SETUP.EXE to start the installation program and follow the instructions on the screen to install the system.

Deletion of setup Files

When you have successfully completed the installation, you may delete the SETUP.EXE and RETOS Setup Packages.msi files.

Support

The software is provided free, is accepted as is, and is not formally supported. Only limited informal technical assistance can be provided, but only on platforms that are the same as our client's (Pay Operations and Service Management Directorate), which is Windows 2000, Windows XP and a Novell 4.9 Network. The requirements for RETOS version 4.0 or greater are Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0 or greater and MDAC (Microsoft Data Access Components) version 2.7 or greater.
