Students and pay

Students are an invaluable part of the federal public service and play an essential role in both the present and future workforce across the country.

Unfortunately, students have not been immune to the pay problems being experienced by many federal public servants. After hundreds of students reported pay issues last year, a number of steps were taken to address the situation:

  • All deputy ministers across government pledged to prioritize student employment
  • Public Services and Procurement Canada established a dedicated group of compensation advisors to handle student files on a priority basis
  • Significant improvements were made to the student on-boarding process

While improvements in processing student pay were seen over the last year, any pay issue is one too many, and we continue to work closely with client departments and agencies to improve hiring processes and to minimize pay delays. Work is now underway to process paperwork in a timely way for students arriving in the fall.

We remind students, and any other employees, that help is available if you are facing an issue with your pay. Speak to your manager right away to discuss your situation, including the availability of emergency salary advances. You can also contact the Public Service Pay Centre and speak to a call centre agent, who can flag your pay issue to the Pay Centre.
