The National Shipbuilding Strategy in 2018

The National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS) will deliver much needed modern ships to the Royal Canadian Navy and the Canadian Coast Guard. The strategy is also reinvigorating our country’s shipbuilding industry and marine sector and generating economic benefits for Canadians.

The Strategy is focused on three pillars:

  1. Large ship construction (more than 1,000 tonnes of displacement)
  2. Small vessel construction (less than 1,000 tonnes of displacement)
  3. Vessel repair, refit and maintenance.

As of September 2018, progress has been made in the following areas:

Large ship construction

Small vessel construction

Vessel repair, refit and maintenance

Although not part of the National Shipbuilding Strategy, a number of key marine contracts have also been signed in 2018, including a $67-million contract with Atlantic Towing Company of Saint John, N.B. for the lease of two Emergency Towing Vessels.
